Angry Citizens Complaining that Real Estate Cost More than Rent

There’s been more than one occasion where I had to end conversation with someone because of their prediction on Seattle’s real estate market. When someone states their opinion on something, I generally listen to their side taking their ideas into consideration. However, there’s been a select few who act as if the world is going to end because of the headlines they read in the paper about “America’s” home prices falling. Of course they’re tainted with the idea that it’s happening here in Seattle too.

Many specifically refer to all the “rich” people that will drive away the Seattle culture we’re all in love with. They’ll wine and threaten about moving away because their rent is getting higher and the space smaller. Even when mentioning San Francisico as proof that the rising costs of urban living does not affect urban culture, some will still rant about how Seattle is getting worse because too many people are moving here. I would assume that’s a true sign of a strong market.

I wish people would stop with the frustration of how they can’t afford anything, and get more focused on how they can. Not enough hand-outs I guess.

COMMENTS

The Millennium Tower is a mixed-use building with the top 6 floors consisting of luxury condominiums. Units started at $1 million and were originally sold as “shells” which allowed buyers to customize the interior design of each condo. The building is highly secure and private. The tower is just steps away from the Seattle Art Museum and Benaroya Hall in the Central Business District.
